E.L. Harvey & Sons is a trash and recycling company that manages waste materials from most of the areas in the Eastern side of Massachusetts. One of the two facilities is located in Westborough, MA. Unlike a typical trash company, E.L. Harvey & Sons uses environmentally friendly practices to reduce overall volume of trash in landfills. Their machinery processes trash through a system of conveyor belts , people, magnetics and screenings, to section out the non-recyclable materials from the recyclable materials.
How does it work?
After the non-recyclables are removed, the process of sorting the recyclables is outlined in the diagram below.
When the recyclable materials are sorted out, they are then sold to companies from different countries around the world. These countries then use these materials to create new reusable products. The non-recyclable materials go to a waste-to-energy plant. The waste-to-energy plant takes these materials and incinerates them to produce electricity. What's unique about this process is that when these materials are burned, the scrubbers (in the machinery) remove any harmful toxins that might get into the atmosphere. After all of the materials are incinerated, the ashes are transported to a landfill.
